I was recently invited to experience the amazing city of Hamburg in collaboration with Come to Hamburg and the nice folks at Heikotel Am Stadtpark were gracious enough to host me for a few days. By the way, be sure to check out our Hamburg Travel Guide to learn about the best Hamburg has to offer.
Heikotel Am Stadtpark Review
Choosing a hotel is always a stressful process. Is it in a good location? How much does it cost? Will it be loud? Will the beds be comfortable? How is breakfast? There is so much to take into consideration.
Well, I recently stayed three nights at Heikotel Am Stadtpark in Hamburg and I’m happy to say that it was a great stay — from the friendly check-in (complete with a constant supply of sweets and fruit at the check-in desk) to the painless checkout.
Hotel Location
Heikotel Am Stadtpark is located in the northern part of Hamburg near the beautiful Stadtpark (City Park). Stadtpark is a huge urban park that’s well-loved by locals — especially during the summer months.
The hotel’s neighborhood is mostly residential so it’s very quiet. I don’t think I heard a single noise at night so this is an excellent place to stay if you’re looking a great night’s sleep (coming from NYC this was greatly appreciated). That said, there is a little cafe, a gastropub, and a little bakery at the end of the street. There is also a nice grocery store very close to the hotel if you need to pick up anything.
And while it might not be within walking distance of the city center, the hotel is located about a 3-minute walk to the train (Saarlandstraße U-Bahn station) so you’re really only about 15-minutes from central Hamburg. From my experience, there was a train about every 3-4 minutes so getting into the city was painless.
Another bonus is that the hotel is about a 10-15 minute walk to a commuter train station which is directly connected to the Hamburg Airport (a 20-minute ride) — which I found very convenient.
The Rooms
My room was clean, spacious, functional, and very comfortable. They even set out a city map, a bottle of water, and a nice selection of fruit (which I promptly consumed). Ohh, the chocolates they put on my pillows were a nice touch.
There was a stocked mini-bar (which I didn’t use) and a Nespresso machine but the pods were €1 each (there was free coffee at breakfast so I never used the Nespresso).
The mattress and bedding were plenty comfortable so I always got a solid night’s sleep. While I didn’t really watch much TV, I did appreciate that it swiveled out from the wall so I could easily watch it from the bed.
The bathroom was large and well-appointed but I really loved the shower. Many budget-friendly hotels skimp on the bathroom but I had no complaints about Heikotel. The water was always warm and the water pressure was excellent.
Directly outside the bathroom is a nice closet with a stand for your luggage, a large mirror, a safe, and space to hang up your clothing.
Breakfast Buffet
The breakfast buffet was solid and I made sure to fill up every morning. They had just about everything you could want for breakfast — including a selection of bread, baked goods, cold cuts, cheese, veggies, cereal, granola, fresh fruit, eggs, and more. There was also plenty of coffee, tea, and juice to drink.
Other Amenities
The hotel also a small exercise room in the basement with cardio equipment and a room with spin bikes (I think they hold spin classes but I’m not sure). I didn’t use the exercise room but it’s a nice option if you’re looking for burn off some of that beer and schnitzel.
They also have free storage lockers for your luggage if you arrive before check-in or need to store your stuff after check-out (which I used).
Overall Thoughts
I enjoyed staying in the Heikotel Am Stadtpark Hotel and think it’s a great choice for anyone who wants a comfortable and budget-friendly place to stay while visiting Hamburg. You can tell the hotel is well-maintained and I appreciated the daily room cleanings. The employees were all friendly and spoke great English so I never had any issues with communication. Additionally, the free wifi was a nice touch as many hotels still charge for it.
