City Guides

Studying abroad was the best decision that we’ve ever made. It’s made an immeasurable impact on our lives. In fact, The Savvy Backpacker would not exist if we weren’t fortunate enough to study abroad.

We created The Savvy Backpacker Study Abroad Scholarship to help give other people the same opportunities we had.

But here’s the thing, we know that these scholarship applications can be incredibly time-consuming. That’s why we’re not doing any of that nonsense. No long essays. No letters of recommendation. No requiring you to make a video application. The Savvy Backpacker Study Abroad Scholarship should only take you a few minutes to submit!

Our Study Abroad Story

James studied abroad in England at the University of Leeds in 2007 and he had the chance to visit multiple countries throughout Western and Eastern Europe. In the summer of 2010, he studied French at Middlebury College through their intensive summer language course (which is a bit like studying abroad since you’re not allowed to speak English the entire summer).

Susan spent a summer studying in Quebec, Canada, and another summer studying in Strasbourg, France. She also taught English in Cambrai, France for a semester and went on to get a Masters in Professional French from the University of Wisconsin-Madison — which sent her to Paris for a year-long internship.

Both these experiences lead us to live and work in Paris — which you can read more about in our About Us section.

All these experiences and travels allowed us to build The Savvy Backpacker. Everything we’ve done goes back to studying abroad… which is why we think it’s so important and it’s the reason we started this scholarship.
